Tips to Keep Pets Safe This Fall

It may seem like we’re in the height of summer, but cool fall weather is just around the corner. Crisper mornings and changing foliage get everyone excited for the changing seasons, including your pet! While fall may be a fun time to be outside – not too hot, not too cold! – it can also be a time of danger for our furry friends. From household poisons to hazardous cold weather, there are important safety issues to consider for your pets.

Ticks & Other Pests

Just because fall is here doesn’t mean that ticks aren’t still lurking. Many species of ticks are active into the winter and can survive the first frost. Continue to use tick and flea prevention products such as collars or shampoos, and regularly check your pet for ticks.

Rodenticides and Cold Weather Poisons

Many homeowners increase the use of rat and mouse poisons in the fall as rodents seek shelter from cooler temperatures and attempting to move indoors. Additionally, homeowners may be completing annual maintenance around their home, such as changing the car’s engine coolant. These chemicals can be poisonous to pets. To prevent ingestion, clean up spill immediately, ensure rodent poison is placed in an area your pet cannot access, and lock up excess chemicals and poisons.

Stay Visible

As the days shorten, you may find yourself walking your pet after dark. Ensure you both have reflective gear. Looking for lighted collars, leashes or flashlights? Stop by the Country Store and let our team help select the perfect safety gear for you and your pup!
